Physical Education
Intent
At The Willows Catholic Primary School, we aim to inspire pupils to enjoy physical activity and develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead healthy and active lives.
Our PE curriculum is broad, balanced and progressive. It develops pupils' competence across a wide range of physical activities, including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, outdoor activity and swimming.
We want pupils to become physically confident and increasingly skilful. They learn how to move effectively, apply skills in different situations, work as part of a team and compete fairly.
PE also supports pupils' wider development. Through physical activity, competition and leadership opportunities, pupils develop resilience, teamwork, respect, self-discipline and sportsmanship.
We aim to give every pupil opportunities to participate, succeed and develop a positive attitude towards physical activity that continues beyond primary school.
Implementation
Pupils receive at least two hours of PE each week through a carefully sequenced curriculum based on the Lancashire PE scheme and supported by the PE Passport.
In the Early Years, children develop fundamental movement skills, coordination and fine and gross motor control. These foundations continue to be developed through Key Stage 1 before pupils apply them with increasing control and precision across a wider range of activities in Key Stage 2.
Teaching is sequenced so that pupils revisit and build upon previous learning. Teachers model techniques, provide opportunities for practice and use in-the-moment feedback to help pupils improve.
Swimming is taught in Key Stage 2, with pupils developing stroke technique, confidence, stamina and water-safety skills so that they can work towards the statutory end-of-Key-Stage-2 swimming requirements.
Pupils also have opportunities to develop leadership skills by leading warm-ups, activities and sporting opportunities for younger pupils.
Our curriculum is enhanced through inter-house competitions, festivals, tournaments and links with local school sport partnerships. Lunchtime and after-school clubs provide further opportunities for pupils to experience a wide range of sports and physical activities.
We monitor participation so that opportunities are accessible to all pupils and teaching is adapted where necessary to support pupils with SEND and other additional needs.
Staff receive appropriate professional development and have access to the resources needed to deliver high-quality PE.
Impact
The impact of our PE curriculum is seen in pupils' increasing physical competence, confidence and understanding.
As pupils progress through school, they should demonstrate greater control, coordination and accuracy and be able to apply their skills across a range of physical activities.
They should understand the importance of physical activity for health and wellbeing and demonstrate positive attitudes towards exercise and participation.
Pupils should also develop the ability to work collaboratively, compete fairly, respond to feedback and demonstrate resilience, respect and sportsmanship.
The PE subject leader monitors the quality and impact of the curriculum through lesson visits, pupil discussions, assessment information, PE Passport records and participation in extra-curricular activity and competition.
By the end of Year 6, our aim is for pupils to leave The Willows as confident and competent participants who understand the value of physical activity and are equipped to make positive choices about maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.
