Religious Education

Intent

At The Willows, we see Religious Education as a way of becoming more fully human as we grow to love ourselves, love one another and love Jesus Christ. Inspired by the Gospel and the teachings of the Catholic Church, we strive to recognise that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and is precious in His eyes.

Through Religious Education, we aim to nurture children who are curious, reflective and compassionate, enabling them to develop a deeper understanding of God, themselves and the world around them. Religious Education is at the heart of our curriculum and supports the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of every child.

Our Religious Education curriculum aims to:

  • develop secure knowledge and understanding of scripture, Catholic beliefs and traditions;
  • enable pupils to become religiously literate and confident in discussing matters of faith and belief;
  • deepen theological understanding through reflection, questioning and dialogue;
  • help children recognise the relevance of faith in everyday life and respond to the call of discipleship;
  • develop an understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and the responsibility to care for others and our common home;
  • foster respect, understanding and appreciation of other faiths and worldviews through dialogue and encounter;
  • encourage children to make meaningful connections between Religious Education and other areas of learning;
  • prepare pupils to participate fully in the life of the Church and contribute positively to society.

Through Religious Education, we aim to help every child grow in faith, hope and love so that they are equipped to flourish as unique individuals and make a positive difference in the world.

Implementation

At the heart of our curriculum is Christ. Through Religious Education, children are encouraged to grow in knowledge, understanding and faith as they come to know God more clearly and understand their place in God's world.

Religious Education is taught using the Religious Education Directory To Know You More Clearly (RED), supported by Magister resources. Through a carefully planned curriculum, children explore scripture, prayer, the teachings of the Church and what it means to live as a follower of Jesus today.

Our lessons are engaging, reflective and inclusive. Children are encouraged to ask questions, think deeply, discuss their ideas and make connections between their learning and everyday life. A variety of approaches are used, including storytelling, drama, art, role play, outdoor learning and creative responses to scripture, helping all children to participate and succeed.

Catholic Social Teaching is woven throughout the curriculum and wider school life. Children learn about human dignity, care for creation and the importance of supporting those in need through initiatives such as CAFOD fundraising, the Big Lent Walk, charitable collections and environmental projects.

Children also learn about other world faiths through the RED Dialogue and Encounter branches, helping them to develop respect, understanding and appreciation of different beliefs and cultures.

Religious Education is enriched through prayer and liturgy, Masses, strong parish links, pupil leadership opportunities and the wider Catholic life of the school. Through these experiences, children learn that faith is not only something we learn about, but something we live each day.

Impact

At The Willows, Religious Education is at the heart of school life and plays a key role in helping children grow spiritually, morally and academically. Through Religious Education, pupils develop knowledge and understanding of scripture, the teachings of the Church and the Catholic faith, while learning how these can guide their choices and actions.

Children are encouraged to reflect, ask questions and make meaningful connections between their learning and everyday life. Through prayer, discussion, service and acts of kindness, they learn to live out Gospel values and understand their responsibility to care for others and the world around them.

The impact of Religious Education can be seen in the way pupils participate in the Catholic life of the school, show respect and compassion towards others and demonstrate a growing understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. They develop confidence in expressing their beliefs, engaging with challenging questions and recognising the dignity of every person.

By the time they leave The Willows, pupils are equipped with the knowledge, understanding and values needed to continue their faith journey with confidence, hope and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world.
