Tower Wood 2019
Tower Wood!
Between the 7th and 11th October, our Year 6 children will be embarking on the adventure of a lifetime… They’ll be spending the week at Tower Wood.
We’ve got lots of different activities lined up including: climbing, walking, canoeing and other water activities. The food promises to be absolutely fantastic as ever!
Whilst we obviously want the children to have fun, we also want them to learn while we are at Tower Wood. We have given the instructors a list of things we would like everyone to develop:
- To become more independent, taking responsibility for our own organisation and actions.
- To develop a sense of resilience – keeping going even when things may seem tough or too hard
- To take ‘safe’ risks when we might not know what will happen
- To step outside of our comfort zones and challenge ourselves to do new or harder things.
Check out the updates and the photos below.

Monday 7th October
After a slightly delayed trip up the motorway, we arrived at Tower Wood to a welcome from the wonderful staff. Our driver helped us unpack our bags and we wandered down the drive to our new home for the week. Tower Wood’s house is basically a mansion on the shores of Lake Windermere!
After a short introduction from Becca, our main instructor, we were told which bedroom we are in and who we are sharing with.
Thankfully, it seems everyone practiced making their beds as it was a rather uneventful task.
After lunch, we met our instructors for the afternoon and headed out to get our waterproof trousers, tops and boots. Mrs. Spacey tells us we’re going to need them this week.
We did various team building activities and games this afternoon as well as going for a tour of the grounds – we know where we can go and can’t!
This evening, after our tea, we played Capture the Flag before getting ready for bed and playing hide and seek.
Before bed, Mr. Wylde will read out the comments that we have received today.
Tuesday 8th October
We have had another great day here at Tower Wood and the weather stayed dry for the most part. After the trauma of making their own packed lunch for the first time, the children enjoyed a full cooked breakfast. It has been excellent to see how the children are serving and organising their table during meal times.
After meeting our instructors and having a quick bag check, the groups dispersed and had a full day of activities. Mr Wylde’s group spent the morning session harnessing up and climbing the tall trees on site at Tower Wood. All of the children really challenged themselves when climbing, pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and I was great to see he positive encouragement from teammates. The afternoon saw the children wear wetsuits for the first time this week and do canoe rafting on Lake Windermere. They completed several challenges trying not to topple into the lake and afterwards got the chance for a quick swim! Mrs Spacey’s group had their adventure day today so spent the full day off site. The day started started by taking a short minibus ride to Hodge Close quarry for a walk and explore in the slate mines. After taking in the breathtaking views and the excitement of the pitch black mine tunnels, the children had a ghyll scramble in the afternoon. Mr Sharrock’s group spent the morning out on the lake in two-man sailing boats. The children were taught how to use equipment, before having a few chances to be towed out by the speedboat and independently sail down the lake. A short lunch followed in the boat house, then the children went exploring Cathedral Quarry slate mines for the afternoon. They learnt the real meaning of darkness as they had to work together to guide themselves out of the mine shafts, before making the two mile lop back around the woods to the minibus.
For tea we have had pie and potato wedges followed by rice pudding – as expected the children have not gone hungry! The rain could not stop us as we ventured outside for games of manhunt and a campfire roasting marshmallows.
Wednesday 9th October
Mrs Spacey’s Group had an exciting day, commencing in the morning with a session of rock climbing and abseiling. After lunch they spent the afternoon out on the lake, venturing out on the giant paddle board, both standing and kneeling through the waters.
Mr Sharrock’s Group started the morning out with the sky pole, testing their courage and bravery with heights, with many attempts at the leap of faith from the top platform. The afternoon encompassed both time on the lake and up in the trees, paddling out in joined canoes and lifting sails for a race back to shore. After a quick shower and hot chocolate, helmets were put back on for a climbing session up trees at the hopes of reaching the ringer at the top.
Mr Wylde’s Group started the day off with a long and steep trek up Gummer’s Howe with the good fortune of pleasant weather aiding their ascent and descent through the journey. Following the treat of an ice-cream, the group set sail back to Tower Wood in good time.
Thursday 10th October
We’ve had another very busy day in the Lake District. We’ve all been out in the hills exploring and taking in the scenery.
Mr. Wylde’s group have been to visit Cathedral Quarry – ask your children about it, the pictures don’t do it justice. We had to walk to the quarry and then we had our lunch in a field with some sheep. When we came back to Tower Wood, we went on the Sky Pole – essentially climbing up a pole, standing on a little platform on the top and then leaping off to try and catch a trapeze… clearly roped up. Have a look at the photos, it looks like we’re flying in some of them.
Mrs. Spacey’s and Mr. Sharrock’s groups have been on their Adventure Day. Every year we programme a day where the children start at Tower Wood and then venture out, using no vehicles to get around. All the children have been on a walk through Moor How and up onto Gummer’s Howe. It is a really great opportunity to encourage the children to develop resilience – they have to keep trying and pushing themselves as there is no way back otherwise.
Enjoy the photos and we’ll update for the final time on the way home tomorrow.
Friday 11th October
Today, even though it was our last day at Tower Wood, we didn’t let that bother us. We made sure we were packed and organised last night – sorting through the lost property – so we didn’t have to do it this morning.
After our final cooked breakfast, we headed out to meet our instructors. Mr. Wylde’s group were going out on the lake on the giant paddle boards; Mr. Sharrock’s group were also on the lake in kayaks; Mrs. Spacey’s group were trying their hand at the Sky Pole.
All of the groups had a fantastic time and it was an excellent way to end our week at Tower Wood.
A note from Mr. Wylde…
Now that we are all safely back, I’d like to add a few thank you notes to this page.
Firstly, to the children. Well done everyone! We have had a truly fantastic week. You have been incredible – a credit to your families and to our school. I hope you have made lots and lots of memories you will look back on in years to come!
The parents. Thank you for giving your children the opportunity to go to Tower Wood. All the children were wonderful and it has been a pleasure to spend the week with them and watch them grow. Every single child has developed and matured this week. They have learn so many new skills that they will be able to transfer to other areas of learning and life.
The staff. I’d like to extend a huge thank you to Mr. Sharrock, Mrs. Spacey, Mr. Carroll and Miss Stedman; without you, our residential would not have been possible. Thank you for all the hard work you put in during the weeks and months before we left. Thank you for all the hard work and commitment you showed while we were away. I know it is a big ask to give up a week of your time.
The instructors. Thank you Rebecca, Susan, Graham and Loz. You have made our children’s week at Tower Wood absolutely fantastic and they have loved it. You are all truly outstanding!
